Last blog post, I wrote of my new vehicle, another minivan in a long line of minvans to make itself a part of my life.
Before Covid-19 hit, I had visions of winding about this beautiful country in my former minivan, stopping to do research for several upcoming novels, and taking a closer look at several of our national parks. Spoiler Alert: my next novel is set in the Yellowstone National Park region.
Fast forward to today: the former minivan was retired and a new replacement minivan, named Magnolia, has been relegated to local grocery store trips, which have been few and far between at that.
During the past months, I added a new trip to my future minivan travels: driving along The Lincoln Highway. Before Amor Towels published his novel, The Lincoln Highway, I had no knowledge of this cross-country route. Did I grow up with my head in the sand? The Lincoln Highway, after all, starts smack in the middle of Manhattan, right near Times Square. How could I not know about this, having grown up in the New York Metro region? A bust of Abraham Lincoln marks the spot. The familiar Lincoln Tunnel, provides east/west travel between Manhattan and New Jersey. I didn’t put this information together, either; that it was part of the Lincoln Highway. Hmmm, you truly can learn something new every day. And enjoyably so, if you read historical fiction.
Many readers put historical fiction at the top of their reading lists. I understand why. The chance to learn about past lives, lifestyles, details and overarching themes of civilizations or eras, along with spending time with captivating characters and a captivating story is a gift. Truly, reading these accounts is a gift.
